ABSTRACT
Side effect of conventional hormone therapy (HT), changing physicians’and patients’ attitudes toward HT and increasing their interest in alternative options. The present study is aimed at evaluating the effect of isovlafones on vaginal cytology and dispareunia symptom in postmenopausal women.
Sixty five postmenopausal women aged >45 years, non-users of HT, were doubled-blinded randomized to receive either isoflavone 100 mg/day or plasebo for 12 weeks. Vaginal cytologic sampling and dyspareunia symptoms performed at baseline and 12 weeks from the first treatment.
Sixty women (92,30%) completed the trial. From this study, we found that Isoflavone supplementation had positive effects on vaginal cytology as expressed by the increasing number of superficial cell (p=0,00) and decreasing number of parabasal cell (p=0,00) and significantly reduced dyspareunia symptom (p=0,02).
